sir,
I am directed by the Lords Commissioners of Her
Majesty's Treasury to acknowledge the receipt of Mr Lucas' letter of the 5th instant (9751/1900) requesting that
$250,000 worth of subsidiary coin in ten-cent pieces may
be supplied to the Government of Hong Kong as soon as possible and that similar consignments may be despatched
at intervals of a fortnight thereafter until further
instructions are received.
In reply, I am to request you to inform Mr
Secretary Chamberlain that My Lords have been in
communication with the Royal Mint on the subject, and that
They regret the demands now being made upon the resources
of that Department for the supply of coin for the United
Kingdom and the Colonies make it impossible to comply in
full with the requisition.
Since the extension of the Mint in 1882 a
remarkable increase has taken place in public requirements.
For some years, the resources of the establishment have
been severely strained, and the enormous output of
coinages of different kinds, which has been effected, has
in fact only been made possible by resort to outside
assistance for the performance of some of the ancillary
processes of coinage. The time has now arrived, when
